Staff Engineer, Agents (AI)

Location: United States — Remote. Additional locations may be considered. Relocation is available case by case. Remote work includes opportunities to spend meaningful time with the team in New York.

What you will do

• Own significant areas of PayBox end to end, from problem definition through production delivery and iteration.
• Develop the next phase of a recently launched product across AI platforms, peer-to-peer payments, DeFi applications, and the plugin ecosystem.
• Build payment, transfer, integration, infrastructure, and application onboarding experiences for AI interfaces.
• Work with Product to turn ambitious ideas into simple, usable experiences and improve onboarding and UX.
• Make pragmatic technical and product decisions across the stack in ambiguous, fast-changing situations.
• Use AI extensively while maintaining independent technical reasoning, judgment, and accountability.

Requirements

• Exceptional technical reasoning, strong engineering fundamentals, and the ability to solve unfamiliar, ambiguous problems.
• High agency, independent thinking, and ownership of important problems without waiting for fully defined requirements.
• Experience building and shipping meaningful products, projects, or systems end to end.
• Strong systems thinking, architectural judgment, and understanding of technical trade-offs.
• Product judgment, thoroughness, attention to detail, and comfort operating in autonomous teams with changing priorities.
• Ability to use AI tools effectively without outsourcing technical reasoning or accountability.

Nice to have

• Experience as a founding or early engineer at a high-growth startup.
• Experience founding and building a company or product, or taking a product from idea through launch and iteration.
• Experience building AI-native products, agents, developer tooling, payments, fintech, crypto, DeFi, MCP, or other emerging agent protocols.
