TL;DR
Senior Backend Engineer (Account) (PHP/Symfony): Building scalable account services and powerful APIs used across Proton products with an accent on architecture, performance optimization, security, and cryptography. Focus on designing HTTP/REST APIs, modeling MySQL data, optimizing Redis-backed services, and leading initiatives from discovery to production.
Location: Paris or Geneva; office-first hybrid work with three core days in the office and work from home up to 30%.

What you will do
- Develop Proton's core account services across the product portfolio.
- Contribute to the architecture of components shared by all Proton products.
- Design powerful APIs that support feature-rich mobile and web applications.
- Build scalable, high-performance solutions and optimize service performance.
- Lead team initiatives from discovery through production.
- Collaborate with Product, Design, API specialists, and engineering colleagues on customer-focused solutions.
Requirements
- Proven experience with backend development and scalable, high-performance systems.
- Strong SQL and data modeling skills, preferably with MySQL, plus familiarity with Redis or other caching technologies.
- Experience with profiling, performance optimization, HTTP/REST, and web API development and consumption.
- Knowledge of security best practices and experience implementing secure software solutions.
- Solid understanding of cryptographic concepts, including key exchange and symmetric versus asymmetric encryption.
- Experience leading a team initiative from discovery to production.
Nice to have
- Operational experience in SRE, on-call support, diagnosis, and troubleshooting of critical systems.
- Experience with Docker or similar containerization technologies.
- Experience with Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Python, Rust, OpenAPI, or comparable API documentation frameworks.
