TL;DR
Senior Mechanical Engineer (Spacecraft): Designing and building flight-ready mechanical systems for spacecraft, including structures, mechanisms, thermal solutions, and packaging, with an accent on end-to-end hardware ownership and cross-functional integration. Focus on performing FEA and thermal analysis, rapidly prototyping and testing hardware, troubleshooting failures, and balancing performance, manufacturability, cost, and schedule.

Location: San Carlos, California, United States; on-site

Salary: $125,000–$175,000 annually

What you will do

  • Own the mechanical design of spacecraft components and assemblies from concept through production.
  • Design structures, mechanisms, thermal solutions, and packaging for space environments.
  • Create engineering documentation, drawings, and hardware release processes.
  • Perform FEA, thermal analysis, and tolerance stack-ups to validate designs.
  • Drive rapid prototyping, build, integration, environmental testing, and launch-readiness activities.
  • Collaborate with propulsion, power, avionics, GNC, software, suppliers, and manufacturers while troubleshooting hardware issues and improving designs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience designing mechanical systems for aerospace or high-performance hardware.
  • Experience taking hardware from concept through build and test.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanics, materials, and thermal systems.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as NX, SolidWorks, or similar.
  • Applicants must meet U.S. ITAR eligibility requirements, including U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, protected-individual status, or eligibility to obtain the required U.S. authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing for thermal, vibration, and vacuum conditions in space environments.
  • Background in spacecraft structures, mechanisms, or thermal systems.
  • Experience with FEA or thermal analysis tools.
  • Hands-on prototyping, machining, or test-setup experience.
  • Experience at a high-growth or early-stage hardware company, or with integration, environmental testing, and launch operations.
