Senior Software Engineer (Distributed Systems)

Location: Pleasanton, California, USA; hybrid with at least 50% of each quarter spent in the office or in the field

Annual base salary: $190,100–$285,100 USD for the primary location; $160,100–$285,100 USD for additional US locations. The role may also include bonus compensation and annual refresh stock grants.

What you will do

• Design and deliver core components of a distributed tracing platform built on ClickHouse and/or Grafana Tempo.
• Build and operate multi-petabyte observability services and infrastructure for traces, metrics, and logs.
• Develop high-throughput data pipelines using Kafka, Spark or Flink, Iceberg, and S3.
• Optimize low-latency ingestion, storage, and sub-second query performance.
• Drive high availability, fault tolerance, and operational reliability across distributed systems.
• Mentor developers and contribute as a domain expert in tracing ingestion, storage, and query performance.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software development engineering experience, including 4+ years designing, building, and operating complex distributed systems.
• Production experience with at least two of Java, Go, Scala, and Python.
• Experience with distributed architectures, high availability, fault tolerance, data partitioning, eventual consistency, sharding, replication, and query optimization.
• Experience with Kafka, Spark, Flink, ClickHouse, or comparable large-scale data processing technologies.
• Experience designing scalable APIs using gRPC, REST, and OpenTelemetry OTLP, plus distributed load testing, integration testing, and CI/CD automation.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; a master’s degree is strongly preferred.

Nice to have

• Experience with observability pipelines or data lake platforms.
• Knowledge of mTLS, multi-tenant authorization, and data encryption for distributed environments.
• Experience writing runbooks, system design specifications, and API documentation.
