Software Engineer — Notification Hub & Experience (Backend)

Location: Toronto, ON, Canada

Salary: CAD 120,000–150,000, CAD 149,500–187,000, or CAD 185,000–231,500 per year, depending on the localized employee work location and relevant factors. Equity grants may also be available.

What you will do

• Define the multi-quarter technical strategy and architecture for the Notification Hub and personalized notification experience.
• Build and scale high-throughput notification systems that reason across the full user notification lifecycle.
• Make architectural decisions balancing relevance, latency, system complexity, conversion value, and long-term reachability costs.
• Drive reliability, SLA improvements, latency reduction, observability, and operational hygiene across distributed infrastructure.
• Partner with product, design, marketing, data science, and infrastructure teams on strategy, experimentation, and cross-functional technical decisions.
• Mentor E4/E5 engineers through design reviews, code reviews, coaching, documentation, and knowledge transfer.

Requirements

• 7+ years of backend engineering experience with demonstrated Staff-level impact, including large, ambiguous, cross-functional projects with organization-wide or company-wide outcomes.
• Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages, including Go, Java, Python, C++, Kotlin, or a similar language.
• Deep experience designing and scaling distributed systems handling a massive volume of events per day.
• Ability to work across long-term technical strategy and detailed system design while maintaining focus on measurable business outcomes.
• Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to align engineering, product, and leadership without formal authority.
• AI fluency and experience applying AI in software development, combined with a product-minded approach.

Nice to have

• Experience building notification, messaging, or communications platforms at scale.
• Experience integrating ML/AI systems in production, including model serving, feature pipelines, real-time inference, or experimentation infrastructure.
• Familiarity with recommendation or personalization systems.
• Experience integrating LLMs into production services.
