Distributed Systems Engineer (Data Platform)

Location: Remote within the United States; open to remote employees across the continental US. The role may include in-person onboarding at the Ann Arbor headquarters.

Salary: $151,000–$191,000 USD annually for most locations; $174,000–$206,000 USD annually in San Francisco Bay, New York City, and Seattle, plus bonus eligibility and equity.

What you will do

• Build large-scale, real-time services and applications that use massive datasets to power internal APIs and external products.
• Develop tooling, libraries, frameworks, and services supporting security, research, and data platform initiatives.
• Productionize prototypes into reliable internal tools, services, and platform capabilities.
• Develop and maintain data pipelines, messaging systems, databases, caching layers, and cloud or on-premises services.
• Participate in technical planning with engineering and product teams.
• Collaborate with Machine Learning Engineers and Security Researchers on solutions that improve security outcomes.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience building distributed systems such as data ingestion pipelines, databases, or services.
• Object-oriented programming experience with Go.
• Experience with at least one cloud provider, such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience with message queues such as AWS Kinesis, Google Pub/Sub, or Kafka, and databases such as BigTable, Cloud Spanner, HBase, or Cassandra.
• Understanding of scalability, fault tolerance, reliability, and maintainable, testable code.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with engineers and product managers; willingness to use AI responsibly to improve work.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with gRPC, REST, Protobuf, or MessagePack.
• Experience deploying or maintaining containerized services in Kubernetes.
• Understanding of Internet protocols and standards.
• Security domain knowledge.
