Senior Staff Software Engineer - Confluent Kafka Storage

Location: Remote within the United States, with roles available in Poughkeepsie, Lowell, Rochester, Tucson, Research Triangle Park, Armonk, Boston, Bellevue, Atlanta, San Jose, Dallas, Austin, San Francisco, and Seattle. Some travel may be required based on business demand.

Salary: $161,000–$299,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design and develop Kora’s highly available, performant, reliable, durable, scalable, and multi-tenant storage engine.
• Architect and implement critical storage components across state management, hardware optimization, disk and network I/O, and fault tolerance.
• Drive technical solutions end to end and set standards for engineering excellence.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and engineering teams on storage and infrastructure integration.
• Shape the long-term technical roadmap and advise teams on complex technical decisions.
• Mentor senior and junior engineers and promote technical excellence.

Requirements

• 10+ years of relevant backend or infrastructure development experience.
• Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Expertise in Java, Scala, C, C++, Go, or another statically typed language.
• Experience designing and building large-scale distributed storage systems.
• Deep knowledge of fault tolerance, consistency, scalability, and systems-level concepts including disks, networks, and operating systems.
• Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and guiding engineers.

Nice to have

• Background in distributed storage systems or databases.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, multi-tenant environments, and SaaS services on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience with Apache Kafka, Apache Iceberg, or Apache Flink.
• Interest in technical evangelism through conferences or technical writing.
