Senior Systems & Safety Engineer – AI/ML (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: Santa Clara, California, United States; onsite five days a week

What you will do

• Lead implementation of ISO 21448 (SOTIF) and UL 4600 frameworks across AI/ML pipelines.
• Derive safety requirements and performance boundaries for neural networks and deep learning models.
• Design and validate deterministic safety guardrails, OOD detectors, and runtime monitoring with fail-safe fallback actions.
• Define dataset safety criteria covering completeness, ODD coverage, class imbalance, and synthetic versus real data fidelity.
• Conduct HAZOP, STPA, and SOTIF analyses for deep learning failure modes, including adversarial examples and sensor or environmental degradation.
• Author structured GSN-based safety cases demonstrating acceptable residual risk for AI components in driverless operations.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in systems engineering, safety engineering, or autonomous systems, including at least 3 years focused on AI/ML safety.
• Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• Deep working knowledge of ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO/PAS 8800, UL 4600, and ISO 26262.
• Strong understanding of LiDAR, radar, camera, and IMU sensor modalities and their failure modes in adverse conditions.
• Ability to work onsite five days per week in Santa Clara, California.

Nice to have

• Experience taking a machine-learning-based Level 4 autonomous vehicle system to driverless commercial deployment.
• Experience with data generation and curation tools, active learning, and automated edge-case extraction pipelines.
