Reporter

Location: San Diego, California, United States; occasional driving between sites, in-person training sessions and meetings required.

Hourly wage: $29.81–$31.73, plus a cell phone stipend.

What you will do

• Report on San Diego communities, their priorities, policy impacts, and local initiatives.
• Develop mutual trust and reliable sources within and around diverse communities.
• Pursue proactive, in-depth enterprise stories with real-world impact.
• Cover breaking news, monitor local and national trends, and meet daily and long-term deadlines.
• Work on multiple projects and collaborate with local government, immigration, health, investigative, data, photographic, and graphic journalism colleagues.

Requirements

• Demonstrated ability in news and enterprise reporting, source development, identifying story ideas, and pursuing tips.
• Strong writing skills and the ability to present complex subjects clearly, creatively, and narratively.
• Curiosity about the priorities and perspectives of San Diego communities and a commitment to inclusive, community-focused journalism.
• Ability to collaborate with data and visual journalists, researchers, and other colleagues through publication.
• Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and willingness to pass a pre-employment background check and MVR check.
• Availability for shift work and coverage outside normal business hours.

Nice to have

• Proficiency in Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Arabic, Chinese, or another language in addition to English.
• Experience producing solutions-oriented journalism and experimenting with creative approaches.
