Senior Systems & Software Architect (Satcom)

Location: Hybrid in Gilching, Bavaria, Germany; up to 4 weeks per year of teleworking outside the usual geographical area.

What you will do

• Lead systems and software architecture for communication systems, operational platforms, and testbed environments across space, ground, and terrestrial segments.
• Drive technical solution design, development, integration, verification, and deployment throughout the project lifecycle.
• Define and evolve technical roadmaps within the Satcom Operations & Testbeds domain.
• Collaborate with business units, technical experts, customers, and international consortia through reviews, workshops, and project meetings.
• Support proposals, work-package planning, innovation initiatives, and technology assessments.
• Mentor engineers, promote knowledge sharing, and represent the organization in technical forums.

Requirements

• Significant experience in system engineering and system architecture for software-intensive, telecommunications, aerospace, or related engineering environments.
• Strong background in software development and architecture, ideally with Python and/or C++, Linux, cloud-native technologies, containerized systems, and distributed systems.
• Solid understanding of DevSecOps, CI/CD, infrastructure automation, and modern software deployment practices.
• Knowledge of communication systems, networking, requirements engineering, interface management, and verification.
• Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering teams and contributing to technical proposals, bids, or business development activities.
• Professional proficiency in English is required. German is advantageous.

Nice to have

• Experience with satellite and optical communications, high-rate data transport, ground segment systems, communication testbeds, or interoperability validation environments.
• Knowledge of secure networking, cyber-resilience, CCSDS standards, space communication protocols, 5G/6G, NTN, or hybrid communication architectures.
• Experience with MBSE, embedded systems, real-time software, ESA, DLR, EUMETSAT, Horizon Europe, or collaborative R&D projects.
• Technical leadership experience in international teams or consortia.
