Lead AI Engineer

Location: Remote within Barcelona, Warsaw, Belgrade, Berlin, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, or the United Kingdom

What you will do

• Lead a team of AI engineers through technical direction, design reviews, pairing, mentoring, and scope development.
• Own the architecture and documentation of AI services, including trade-offs, rejected alternatives, and technical standards.
• Build and deploy AI-powered customer and internal solutions using LLMs, RAG, tool calling, workflows, and agentic patterns.
• Own AI systems end to end, from problem framing and implementation through evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
• Develop scalable inference pipelines with attention to latency, cost, security, reliability, and observability.
• Partner with product, business, domain, and engineering stakeholders to shape roadmaps, negotiate scope, and integrate AI into real workflows.

Requirements

• Proven experience leading an engineering team or acting as a tech lead with responsibility for delivery.
• Experience owning the technical direction of systems used by teams beyond your own and influencing product or business decisions through technical reasoning.
• Production experience building and deploying AI systems, including LLM applications such as RAG, agents, tool use, prompt engineering, evaluations, structured outputs, guardrails, or fine-tuning.
• Strong Python and software engineering fundamentals, with experience integrating AI into backend or product workflows.
• Ability to design evaluation, monitoring, and continuous improvement loops, plus experience with cloud infrastructure and containerized deployments.
• Fluent English at C1 level required.

Nice to have

• Experience in fintech, financial services, risk, compliance, or operations-heavy environments.
• Applied ML experience beyond LLMs, such as classification, anomaly detection, ranking, or document intelligence.
• Experience with vector databases, knowledge systems, retrieval infrastructure, benchmarking, experimentation, or large-scale cost and latency optimization.
• Startup or founder background, or visible AI open-source and side-project contributions.
