Staff Software Engineer, Compute Systems Software — Embedded Linux Platform (Automotive)

Location: Mountain View, California, United States; hybrid with regular onsite collaboration at a GM technical center and reporting at least three times per week or as directed by the manager.

Base salary: $217,000–$275,000 per year, plus potential incentive pay and benefits.

What you will do

• Design, develop, integrate, and debug embedded Linux platforms for ARM-based in-vehicle compute systems.
• Own kernel configuration, BSP integration, device drivers, boot and recovery paths, device trees, and low-level system services.
• Build and maintain Yocto-based distributions and deterministic production image pipelines across vehicle programs and hardware variants.
• Improve platform robustness through watchdogs, health monitoring, fault handling, diagnostics, and recovery strategies.
• Profile and optimize CPU, memory, I/O, boot-time, power, and thermal behavior using low-level tracing and debugging tools.
• Lead architecture reviews, mentoring, cross-team debugging, vendor integration, and platform-wide engineering standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of professional experience in embedded systems, kernel-level, or platform software development, including production software delivery.
• Deep expertise with embedded Linux on ARM-based SoCs, including kernel subsystems, device drivers, BSP integration, bootloaders, board bring-up, and device trees.
• Strong hands-on experience with Yocto or a comparable embedded Linux build system and commercial embedded Linux deployments.
• Strong proficiency in C, with practical experience in Python, Bash, Make-based build flows, Git/GitHub, CI/CD, automated testing, and release engineering.
• Experience leading complex root-cause analysis, mentoring engineers, influencing architecture, and working with silicon vendors or platform partners.

Nice to have

• Linux kernel or open-source upstreaming experience.
• Android Automotive OS, HAL integration, and multimedia pipeline experience.
• Experience with crash analysis, telemetry, fault injection, resilience testing, secure boot, OTA updates, rollback, or production recovery.
• Knowledge of automotive safety concepts such as ISO 26262, ASIL, safety islands, watchdog architectures, and health monitoring frameworks.
