Senior Manager, Data Engineer

Location: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan corporate office. Applicants must currently reside in Japan and already possess valid work authorization for Japan.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate scalable cloud-native data platforms for Japan and Korea.
• Develop and maintain reliable automated data pipelines supporting analytics and business operations.
• Own development, testing, and production environments, including CI/CD, source control, configuration management, and deployments.
• Act as the functional owner for in-house data products, ensuring data quality, usability, and business relevance.
• Analyze complex data flows, lead root-cause investigations, and translate business requirements into robust data models and analytics-ready datasets.
• Coordinate with business analysts, marketing analytics, product owners, global and offshore engineering teams, vendors, and downstream analytics teams.

Requirements

• 6+ years of data engineering experience.
• Strong ANSI SQL skills, including DDL, DML, and DCL.
• Hands-on experience with cloud data services such as AWS Glue, Athena, EMR, Azure, GCP, or Snowflake.
• Experience with big-data frameworks such as Spark, Hadoop, Hive, Presto, HBase, or Phoenix.
• Strong scripting and automation skills with Python, Bash, or similar languages; understanding of distributed systems, data structures, and performance optimization.
• Business-level English and conversational or higher Japanese are required; approximately 80% of the role is conducted in English and 20% in Japanese.

Nice to have

• Experience with Java/J2EE, Spring, RESTful services, or microservices.
• Exposure to NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB, Cassandra, or MongoDB, and Linux.
• Experience with CloudFormation, Terraform, or other Infrastructure-as-Code tools.
• Experience supporting analytics dashboards or visualization tools.
• Cloud or data certifications, and a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field.
