Communications Specialist II - Science Communications (Science Writing and Media Relations): Developing accurate, accessible research stories and digital content for public, media, and stakeholder audiences with an accent on translating complex scientific findings and coordinating cross-functional communications. Focus on identifying newsworthy research, maintaining editorial and brand consistency, and analyzing content performance to improve communication campaigns.
Location: College Station, Texas; full-time onsite work is required for the first 90 days. Afterward, up to 20 hours per week may be performed at an alternate work location with approval.

What you will do
- Write and edit science-driven stories, features, and news content for AgriLife Today and other public-facing channels.
- Translate complex research findings from faculty, researchers, and Extension specialists into clear, accurate, engaging narratives.
- Act as the communications contact for assigned units and identify story opportunities from publications, grants, awards, and Extension milestones.
- Maintain web content on KPEP sites and ensure consistent editorial standards, brand voice, and messaging across platforms.
- Coordinate with leadership, media relations, social media, web, photo/video, and graphic design stakeholders.
- Monitor communication metrics and prepare reports and recommendations for internal stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least two years of related experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication, editing, interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.
- Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Ability to multitask, manage deadlines, and work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to work onsite full-time in College Station, Texas for the first 90 days.
Nice to have
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Agricultural Communications, Life Sciences, or a related field, or a relevant master’s degree.
- Three or more years of experience in science writing, journalism, or communications.
- Experience writing for a digital newsroom, magazine, or news publication.
- Knowledge of AP style, earned media, and media relations practices.
- Experience covering agriculture, natural resources, or life sciences research.
