Mechanical Design Senior Staff Engineer (HDD)

Location: Normandale, United States; onsite at Seagate's Normandale campus in Edina and Bloomington. Travel: up to 10%.

Estimated base salary: $132,974–$193,816 per year.

What you will do

• Design and develop Head Gimbal Assemblies, flexures, suspensions, and micro-actuated mechanical subsystems from concept through validation.
• Develop mechanical solutions for bandwidth, resonance, stiffness, coupling, damping, robustness, and precision-motion challenges.
• Build, automate, and maintain dynamic and structural FEA models and parametric simulation workflows.
• Design experiments and lead model-to-test correlation using LDV, oscilloscopes, function generators, NI data acquisition systems, and high-frequency instrumentation.
• Create novel architectures and actuation concepts, evaluate emerging materials and manufacturing approaches, and support technology roadmaps.
• Lead cross-functional programs across R&D, manufacturing, suppliers, controls, materials, electronics, and systems engineering; mentor engineers and guide technical decisions.

Requirements

• Advanced experience in mechanical dynamics, structural mechanics, vibration analysis, and precision actuation systems.
• Ability to apply first-principles understanding to mechanical design, model development, simulation validation, and experimental correlation.
• Experience with data analysis and automation using Python and/or MATLAB.
• Experience bridging research, design, validation, and manufacturing requirements and leading complex technical programs.
• Bachelor's degree in a related engineering field with 12+ years of experience, master's degree with 8+ years, PhD with 5+ years, or equivalent education and experience.
• Ability to work onsite at the Normandale campus in the United States.

Nice to have

• Expertise with ANSYS APDL, ANSYS Workbench, HyperWorks, MATLAB, or equivalent simulation tools.
• Experience with piezoelectric materials, micro-actuators, MEMS, material characterization, or high-performance mechatronic systems.
• Experience applying AI/ML, advanced analytics, surrogate modeling, optimization, or automated design exploration to engineering problems.
• Experience with invention disclosures, patent generation, technology strategy, and transitioning first-of-a-kind technologies to manufacturing.
