TL;DR
Senior Manager, Indirect Tax (Construction): Managing U.S. sales and use tax compliance, taxability analyses, audits, exemption certificates, and tax technology processes with an accent on construction-industry transactions, multi-state requirements, and cross-functional business guidance. Focus on developing supportable tax positions, improving tax determination and accrual processes, managing audit risks, and leading indirect tax team members.

Location: Remote or hybrid, with regular in-office presence in San Diego, California; Broomfield, Colorado; or Portland, Oregon. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.

Salary: $155,213.00–$194,017.00 per year.

What you will do

  • Manage U.S. sales and use tax compliance, reporting, reconciliations, payments, and use tax accruals.
  • Lead multi-state taxability reviews covering construction materials, equipment, rentals, services, vendors, customers, and project transactions.
  • Manage exemption and resale certificate processes, including validation, documentation, renewal, and remediation.
  • Support sales and use tax audits, notices, inquiries, refund claims, voluntary disclosures, and risk remediation.
  • Translate tax conclusions into ERP, procurement, billing, and tax technology rules while improving automation, controls, and reporting.
  • Partner with Accounting, Finance, Legal, Procurement, Operations, IT, and project teams while coaching indirect tax team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business, or a related field.
  • 15+ years of progressive tax experience, including significant U.S. sales and use tax experience.
  • Meaningful indirect tax experience in construction, engineering, EPC, infrastructure, or a related project-based industry.
  • Strong knowledge of state and local sales and use tax, including nexus, sourcing, taxability, exemptions, resale, and accruals.
  • Experience with multi-state taxability analyses, exemption and resale certificates, compliance, audits, ERP systems, tax engines, or tax compliance technology.
  • Strong analytical, communication, project management, organizational, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have

  • CPA, CMI, JD, MST, or another relevant professional designation or advanced degree.
  • Experience with large-scale construction, infrastructure, energy, or capital projects.
  • Experience with taxability matrices and exemption certificate processes.
  • Experience with Vertex, Avalara, or similar tax determination and compliance platforms.
