Preconstruction Project Manager - Substation - Michels Power, Inc.

Location: Flexible; associated with Otsego, Minnesota, with up to 25% travel for customer meetings, project reviews, startup activities, and site visits.

Salary: $114,000–$173,000 USD per year.

What you will do

• Lead preconstruction planning for utility substations, transmission interconnections, renewable energy, battery energy storage, and EPC projects.
• Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, procurement plans, milestone tracking tools, and readiness plans.
• Coordinate handoffs and reviews across business development, estimating, engineering, procurement, contracts, project controls, operations, and field leadership.
• Support contract execution, permitting, subcontractor readiness, long-lead equipment procurement, and mobilization planning.
• Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies supporting safety, quality, financial performance, and customer objectives.
• Ensure projects transition from preconstruction into operations without scope gaps, procurement delays, permitting challenges, or startup issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in project management, construction management, engineering, or a related field, plus 3+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination.
• Experience with utility substation, transmission, distribution, renewable energy, battery energy storage, or EPC power delivery projects.
• Experience with estimating, budgeting, project planning, scheduling, procurement coordination, or project management.
• Ability to review estimates, schedules, contracts, engineering documents, specifications, and execution plans.
• Strong communication, organizational, analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel up to 25%.

Nice to have

• Working knowledge of BIM, design coordination, and design-build or EPC delivery methods.
• Experience with Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, Bluebeam, Procore, Oracle Unifier, InEight, or similar platforms.
• PE, PMP, or related industry certification.
