Director, Enterprise EH&S (Biotechnology)

Location: Minneapolis, MN. Hybrid or on-site work arrangement based on business needs; approximately 20–30% domestic and international travel is required. Occasional work outside standard business hours may be needed to support global teams and urgent EH&S matters. Work authorization in the United States is required without current or future visa sponsorship.

Salary: $133,300–$219,100 per year.

What you will do

• Develop and execute enterprise-wide EH&S strategy, governance frameworks, standards, policies, procedures, risk assessments, and mitigation plans.
• Lead enterprise programs covering chemical safety, industrial hygiene, laboratory safety, biosafety, bloodborne pathogens, ergonomics, hazard communication, SDS management, product stewardship, global labeling, environmental compliance, and emergency preparedness.
• Serve as the senior technical resource for complex EH&S matters, regulatory developments, inspections, audits, exposure assessments, and risk-based controls.
• Provide functional leadership to site-level EH&S leaders through a matrix organization and oversee external consultants and specialized technical resources.
• Partner with Research and Development, Facilities, Engineering, Operations, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Legal, Human Resources, and Sustainability to integrate EH&S into facilities, laboratories, equipment, materials, projects, and business initiatives.
• Establish training strategies, performance metrics, dashboards, management systems, audits, and continuous-improvement processes aligned with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 principles.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Public Health, Chemistry, Biology, or a related technical discipline.
• At least 10 years of progressive EH&S experience, including responsibility for enterprise, regional, or multi-site programs.
• Experience developing and implementing enterprise EH&S standards, policies, governance processes, and risk-management programs.
• Experience supporting laboratory, research, manufacturing, or other regulated environments within biotechnology, life sciences, healthcare, or related industries.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. OSHA requirements and environmental regulations, with familiarity navigating international EH&S requirements.
• Experience leading through influence in matrixed organizations and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders across geographic regions.
• Demonstrated success driving organizational change and fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Technical expertise in environmental, health, and safety disciplines, especially chemical safety, industrial hygiene, laboratory environments, occupational exposure assessment, and risk-based controls.
• Ability to interpret complex regulations, translate them into scalable enterprise processes, communicate with executive audiences, manage multiple priorities, and balance compliance, operations, scientific innovation, and business objectives.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related field.
• CIH, CSP, CHMM, or equivalent professional certification.
• Experience in biotechnology, life sciences, pharmaceutical, medical device, or similarly regulated industries.
• Expertise in chemical safety, industrial hygiene, laboratory safety, biosafety, and biological hazard control programs.
• Experience with product stewardship, SDS management, global hazard communication, CLP, REACH, and other international product compliance frameworks.
• Experience supporting ISO 14001 and/or ISO 45001 management systems, developing enterprise audit programs, leading regulatory inspections, and managing external consultants or technical service providers.
