Staff Geophysicist (Machine Learning)

Location: Chantilly, Virginia, United States. The role includes outdoor field work, remote testing locations, 10–15% travel, and flexible hours during field operations.

Salary: $110,448–$200,137.60 USD annually.

What you will do

• Lead geophysical field surveys using seismic reflection and refraction, ground-penetrating radar, electromagnetic, and passive seismic techniques.
• Operate and maintain geophysical equipment and document field activities, equipment status, and test procedures.
• Develop machine learning algorithms and computational methods for detecting and classifying subsurface features and materials.
• Analyze seismic, acoustic, acceleration, and electromagnetic sensor data using physics-based models, inversion theory, and 3D visualization.
• Design test plans, validate models and algorithms, and integrate geophysical data into broader mission objectives.
• Collaborate with software developers, engineers, data scientists, government clients, and interagency partners.

Requirements

• BS degree in physical science or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• At least 7 years of relevant experience in data acquisition, test development, geophysical modeling, interpretation, and technical reporting.
• Hands-on experience with algorithm development, machine learning, digital signal processing, large multimodal datasets, and multiple sensor types.
• Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, R, or C/C++.
• Ability to perform field work, travel 10–15%, work flexible hours, and lift and carry equipment weighing more than 50 pounds.
• U.S. citizenship and a current Secret security clearance are required, with the ability to obtain and maintain TOP SECRET/SCI.

Nice to have

• MS degree in physical science or a related discipline.
• Experience supporting Department of Defense or Intelligence Community projects.
• Experience with artificial intelligence, data analytics, field logistics, instrumentation, and mechanical or electrical troubleshooting.
• Active TS/SCI clearance, professional certifications or memberships, and forklift certification.
