TL;DR
Data Lead (AI and Automation) (Data Science, Machine Learning, and Azure): Designing, delivering, and governing data, AI, automation, analytics, and dashboard solutions across Smiths Group with an accent on trusted data foundations, security, scalable architecture, and team leadership. Focus on building machine learning and deep learning applications, managing data quality and governance, and integrating Azure Data Lake, Databricks, BI, and cloud data services.
Location: Birmingham, UK; full-time onsite role

What you will do
- Design, deliver, and support data, AI, automation, analytics, machine learning models, dashboards, and related platforms.
- Own the roadmap for trusted data foundations, including master and reference data, data quality, governance, cataloguing, traceability, and access controls.
- Provide technical and business leadership across data architecture, integration, visualisation, and emerging AI technologies.
- Establish data management policies, standards, operational controls, platform administration, performance monitoring, and compliance practices.
- Partner with business and divisional stakeholders to define requirements, resolve data issues, and support adoption through documentation, training, and user support.
- Lead team workload planning, mentoring, capacity visibility, reporting, and engagement activities across onshore and offshore support models.
Requirements
- Degree-level education or equivalent experience.
- Experience with machine learning, deep learning, NLP, computer vision, and data science methodologies.
- Proficiency in Python, Java, and R, with knowledge of TensorFlow or PyTorch.
- Experience with Azure Data Lake, Databricks, data architecture, ETL, data mining, BI, big data, data governance, data quality, and data cleansing.
- Knowledge of SQL, data security, data administration, cloud and on-premise data services, and BI tools such as Power BI, OBIEE, Tableau, or QlikView.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, organisational, project management, and team leadership skills.
Nice to have
- Experience with Azure SQL Database, Analysis Services, Logic Apps, and Data Factory.
- Understanding of Hadoop, Spark, PaaS concepts, and cloud BI.
- ERP experience and implementation background.
