Principal Scientist – Data Insights & Hypothesis Design (AI)

Location: Chicago, United States

Salary: $150,000–$200,000 annually in Chicago; $165,000–$225,000 in New York City or San Francisco. Compensation may vary for Colorado, Illinois, and New York locations.

What you will do

• Evaluate clinical-genomic datasets, write SQL, R, and Python code, and prototype data offerings within the Tempus Data Model.
• Deliver implementation-ready table and column specifications for scalable, production-grade data products.
• Translate client research objectives across drug discovery and development into actionable clinico-genomic data strategies.
• Evaluate datasets, conduct User Acceptance Testing, and create scientifically validated data insight reports and capability demonstrations.
• Oversee multimodal data across disease areas, with a focus on neurology, Alzheimer’s disease, immunology, and inflammation.

Requirements

• PhD in a quantitative or NGS-related discipline such as computational biology, genetics, bioinformatics, or systems biology, plus 6+ years of industry experience.
• Deep expertise in oncology, neurology, or immunology and experience analyzing large-scale clinico-genomic datasets across multiple disease areas.
• Experience collaborating with data engineering and platform teams on relational databases, advanced SQL data models, and production-grade infrastructure.
• Current knowledge of foundation models, generative AI architectures, and agentic workflows for complex biological data.
• Deep experience with multi-omic analyses and NGS modalities, including single-cell sequencing, immunomics, metagenomics, and varied sequencing platforms.
• Proficiency in Python and/or R for reproducible scientific analysis, workflow development, and data visualization, plus strong cross-functional communication and mentoring skills.
