Senior Backend Engineer (Node.js)

Location: Tysons Corner, VA, United States; four days per week in the office

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and RESTful APIs for K-12 learning environments.
• Build and manage APIs with Node.js and Express, including system integrations.
• Design relational and NoSQL data models and maintain AWS-based backend systems.
• Improve performance, scalability, reliability, architecture, and deployment practices.
• Troubleshoot production issues and support system stability.
• Collaborate with frontend developers, QA engineers, product teams, and cross-functional stakeholders while maintaining CI/CD workflows.

Requirements

• 10+ years of overall software development experience, including 5+ years with Node.js and Express.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Expert-level JavaScript and TypeScript skills with strong experience building and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Strong SQL skills, preferably PostgreSQL, plus experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or DynamoDB.
• Experience with AWS services including Lambda, ECS, EC2, RDS, S3, DynamoDB, and API Gateway; Git; and Unix/Linux environments.
• Ability to pass federal and state criminal background checks, including FBI/BCI checks.

Nice to have

• Experience with Docker and Docker Compose.
• Familiarity with AWS CDK.
• Experience building microservices or distributed systems.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate across teams.
