Staff Software Engineer, Compute (Temporal Cloud)

Location: Remote-first; most roles are remote in-country, some are remote within a region, and a few teams have an in-office hub. Occasional travel may be required for onboarding and team gatherings.

What you will do

• Create managed compute primitives with clear abstractions, APIs, and extensibility across compute providers.
• Design self-optimizing autoscaling systems with signals, safeguards, and predictable worker-fleet scaling.
• Architect, build, and operate performance-critical services on the task-execution hot path.
• Deliver secure cloud integrations, including IAM boundaries, credential handling, networking constraints, quotas, and failure management.
• Improve operability through SLOs, tracing, metrics, load testing, failure testing, incident reviews, and continuous hardening.
• Define the Open Source Server and Cloud boundary, lead cross-team platform changes, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• Significant experience building distributed systems or multi-tenant platform services through design, implementation, and production operations.
• Strong fundamentals in concurrency, performance, reliability, and failure-mode analysis.
• Experience shipping platform primitives such as APIs, control planes, or data planes for engineers or customers.
• Experience owning SLOs, incident response, and on-call quality improvements.
• Excellent written communication and clear technical tradeoff analysis.

Nice to have

• Experience building cloud infrastructure platforms.
• Experience with IAM and security boundaries for cross-account execution.
• Experience building Kubernetes controllers or CRDs and operating heterogeneous worker fleets.
• Go experience.
