Senior AI Engineer (WAT Remote) (NLP)

Location: Worldwide; remote work aligned with WAT.

What you will do

• Lead the design, training, optimization, and deployment of large-scale language models for African languages and dialects.
• Develop preprocessing, tokenization, embedding, data collection, annotation, and multilingual text pipelines.
• Implement and fine-tune transformer architectures such as GPT, BERT, and T5 for text generation, translation, and sentiment analysis.
• Deploy, monitor, and maintain production LLM systems in cloud environments.
• Establish model evaluation frameworks using metrics such as perplexity, BLEU, and human-centered benchmarks.
• Collaborate with linguists, cultural experts, and AI researchers, while documenting architectures, processes, and results.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of AI/ML engineering experience focused on NLP and large language models.
• Strong expertise in transformer-based models, including GPT, BERT, T5, or equivalent.
• Proficiency with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Hugging Face Transformers.
• Experience training and fine-tuning LLMs on large-scale multilingual datasets.
• Experience building text data collection, preprocessing, and annotation pipelines.
• Familiarity with AWS, Azure, or GCP and a proven record of deploying production NLP systems.

Nice to have

• Experience with low-resource languages or multilingual NLP.
• Knowledge of cultural and linguistic nuances in African contexts.
• Familiarity with ethical AI principles for language technologies.
