Senior Staff Optical Engineer (Semiconductor Inspection)

Base pay: $167,300–$284,400 annually

What you will do

• Lead the complete design process for one or more optical subsystems supporting the BBP product roadmap.
• Own optical architecture investigations and evaluate design options across performance, cost, and schedule trade-offs.
• Collaborate with suppliers, technology teams, and system engineers to translate system requirements into optical, mechanical, and metrology requirements.
• Develop optical metrology and alignment concepts for targeted system performance.
• Follow design reviews, procurement, testing, integration, and release processes.
• Diagnose and solve issues in prototype and released wafer inspection systems.

Requirements

• Doctorate with 5 years of related experience, master’s degree with 8 years, or bachelor’s degree with 12 years.
• Strong background in optics, physics, imaging-system aberrations, Fourier optics, polarization, or radiometry.
• Hands-on lens-design experience, especially with diffraction-limited, large-numerical-aperture microscope objectives.
• Experience developing optical system requirements, alignment strategies, error budgets, and metrology for complex high-precision systems.
• Expertise with Code V or Zemax and proficiency with Matlab or Python.
• Strong communication, critical-thinking, methodical problem-solving, collaboration, and technical leadership skills.

Nice to have

• Semiconductor inspection or lithography equipment experience.
• Direct experience with DUV or VUV optics.
• Curiosity and willingness to share knowledge with junior engineers.
