Lead Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands or London, United Kingdom; hybrid model with four days in the office.

What you will do

• Own the Clearisq codebase and define its target architecture across quantitative models, data pipelines, analytics, platform services, and integrations.
• Drive architectural decision records, engineering standards, testing strategies, observability, and long-term codebase sustainability.
• Ensure high availability, determinism, numerical correctness, reproducibility, explainability, and auditability for the clearing risk platform.
• Extend the real-time portfolio risk engine with additional risk calculations, including liquidity stress tests, and prepare it for broader Cboe usage.
• Use AI tools for code comprehension, development, refactoring, test generation, log analysis, performance investigation, and incident learning while establishing quality and security guardrails.
• Act as the technical interface between Software Engineering, Risk, Quant, Operations, and external stakeholders without direct people management responsibilities.

Requirements

• Strong experience designing and owning complex backend systems in Java, with Python exposure.
• Proven experience with data-heavy, computation-intensive platforms and large in-memory datasets.
• Strong knowledge of software architecture, testing, observability, data structures, numerical computing, and analytical problem-solving.
• Hands-on experience using AI tools in daily engineering workflows and evaluating AI-generated output for production use.
• Ability to reason about quantitative models and collaborate with quant or risk model developers.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to lead technical discussions and make accountable decisions in high-pressure environments.
