Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Applied AI)

Location: Fully remote within the United States

Salary: $190,000–$230,000 annual base salary

What you will do

• Design, build, and launch backend services and product capabilities incorporating LLMs, machine learning models, and other AI systems.
• Develop production workflows for model inference, structured outputs, tool use, retrieval, agentic systems, and other LLM application patterns.
• Partner with Data Scientists to turn models and experiments into reliable, maintainable production systems.
• Build evaluation, observability, and feedback mechanisms for monitoring and improving AI performance.
• Design scalable backend architecture that handles probabilistic model behavior and supports structured and unstructured clinical data, including documents and images.
• Support production applications and AI systems while maintaining strong privacy, security, reliability, and failure-handling practices.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software development experience, including significant backend and cloud-based systems experience.
• Expertise in Python and/or TypeScript with strong software engineering fundamentals.
• Production experience building LLM-powered applications and integrating models into larger software systems.
• Experience designing APIs, services, data models, asynchronous or event-driven workflows, and cloud-native distributed systems.
• Experience with Postgres or a similar relational database, plus evaluation, debugging, and monitoring of AI systems in production.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with traditional machine learning, generative AI, LangChain, LangGraph, Langfuse, Braintrust, or similar tools.
• Experience with retrieval-augmented generation, tool-calling, agentic workflows, computer vision, multimodal models, document understanding, or OCR pipelines.
• Experience with Kubernetes, HL7/FHIR, EHR technologies, Snowflake, Datadog, health tech, or hospital billing systems.
• Experience designing evaluation datasets, automated evaluations, human-in-the-loop workflows, or model feedback loops.
• Experience in a scale-up or rapid-growth technology company.
