Senior Software Engineer (Media Foundations)

Location: Remote - United States

Base salary: $190,000–$267,000 USD per year, plus potential equity and, depending on the position, commission.

What you will do

• Define and build technical components for ingesting, processing, storing, and delivering video and audio content.
• Collaborate with product, design, client engineering, platform engineering, and other engineering teams on media products and features.
• Own the full development cycle, including technical design, development, testing, experimentation, analysis, and launch.
• Review code, design documents, product specifications, and mocks while providing actionable feedback.
• Improve media performance and delivery quality across Reddit, balancing rapid delivery with system reliability.
• Establish engineering standards, recommend best practices, and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of professional software development experience in Go, Python, Ruby, Java, C++, or another general-purpose language.
• 3+ years of industry experience working with large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience designing maintainable APIs with GraphQL, REST, HTTP, gRPC, and basic Thrift.
• Experience with distributed caching and large-scale distributed data storage systems such as Redis.
• Knowledge of image processing, HLS, MPEG-DASH, MP4, streaming protocols, video compression standards, and effective collaboration in a fully remote environment.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of video visual quality metrics such as VMAF and PSNR.
• Hands-on experience with FFMPEG, GPAC, or similar media frameworks.
• Experience with client-side media technologies such as AVFoundation, VideoToolbox, and video prefetching.
• Knowledge of background data fetching and strong SQL-based data analysis skills.
• Curiosity about advances in video compression and engagement with research and industry trends.
