Environmental Engineer (Pulp & Paper)

Location: Onsite at PCA mill locations in Counce, TN; DeRidder, LA; Filer City, MI; International Falls, MN; Jackson, AL; Massillon, OH; Gladstone, VA; Tomahawk, WI; Valdosta, GA; or Wallula, WA. Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Starting salary: $86,000–$90,000 per year.

What you will do

• Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations, permits, reporting requirements, and corporate standards.
• Manage environmental programs, procedures, records, audits, inspections, and agency reporting covering air, wastewater treatment, land application, and chemical management.
• Evaluate mill systems, process changes, capital projects, and new equipment installations to identify and mitigate environmental compliance risks.
• Identify environmental issues, troubleshoot problems, develop corrective actions, and follow through with operations, maintenance, engineering, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
• Support environmental training, compliance procedures, project planning, and continuous improvement that reduce risk and improve mill performance.
• Work safely and support mill safety, environmental, quality, and regulatory expectations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, environmental, civil engineering, or a related field.
• 0–4 years of experience in process engineering or environmental engineering, including related experience or co-op/internships in the paper industry.
• Authorization to work in the United States and a valid driver’s license.
• Experience using AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Project.
• Knowledge of the pulp and paper industry, wastewater treatment, and recovery operations.
• Familiarity with instrumentation and control systems.
• Ability to work under pressure and within time constraints, multitask, and build relationships with internal and external customers.
• Excellent communication, analytical, organizational, computer, planning, and follow-up skills; demonstrated leadership and people and process management abilities.
• Ability to make sound independent decisions through creative problem-solving and manage ambiguity, change, a fast-paced environment, and multiple simultaneous requests.

Nice to have

• Current membership in the paper foundation at Auburn University, Georgia Tech University, University of Maine, Miami University (Ohio), University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, NC State University, SUNY ESF, University of Washington–Seattle, Western Michigan University, or University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point.
• Current enrollment at a state or technological university in AL, FL, GA, IL, ID, LA, MI, MN, MS, NC, ND, OH, TN, TX, VA, WA, or WI.
• Participation in career fairs or on-campus interview days at the listed schools, which receives first consideration.
