Backend Engineer (Node.js)

Location: Remote; CET hours preferred

Salary: 609,000–714,500 Serbian dinars gross per month

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js and TypeScript.
• Develop product features from concept through deployment in collaboration with product managers and frontend engineers.
• Own backend architecture decisions related to performance, reliability, security, and scalability.
• Build and improve event-driven systems, background processing, analytics pipelines, and search capabilities.
• Write unit tests, review code, refactor legacy systems, and implement observability and performance improvements.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to engineering standards and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

• 7+ years of backend development experience, preferably in a product-driven environment.
• Strong hands-on experience with Node.js and frameworks such as Koa or NestJS.
• Deep TypeScript expertise, including advanced typing and module systems.
• Experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases, plus event-driven architecture using Kafka, RabbitMQ, or Bull/Redis.
• Hands-on experience with ClickHouse or similar analytics databases and Elasticsearch.
• Comfort working within a Russian-speaking team, with strong ownership, communication, system design, and performance optimization skills.

Nice to have

• Experience in a remote-first, globally distributed team.
• Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or similar monitoring and observability tools.
• Interest in nonprofit technology and experience communicating complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
