Principal Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Mountain View, California, United States; hybrid work schedule with onsite presence.

Base salary: $349,000–$431,000 USD per year, depending on location, experience, education, training, and skill level. Additional eligibility includes an annual bonus, equity incentives, and company benefits.

What you will do

• Develop and lead the strategy for a next-generation post-training system built on large-scale machine learning models.
• Advance post-training techniques used in AI running onboard autonomous vehicles.
• Track post-training research and identify applications for real-world autonomous driving challenges.
• Collaborate with ML platform teams to build effective and scalable post-training capabilities.
• Guide teams in applying post-training strategies to targeted production problems.
• Participate in the engineering leadership community shaping the broader ML stack.

Requirements

• MS in computer science with an emphasis on machine learning or an equivalent degree; PhD preferred.
• 10+ years of leadership experience in a large-scale machine-learned production system.
• Experience leading a production post-training system serving more than 100 million users and solving multiple targeted problems in parallel.
• Experience building metrics, data, and flywheels for post-training applications.
• Experience influencing at director and VP level or higher without direct authority.
• Ability to balance hands-on leadership with engineering strategy development and influence.

Nice to have

• Experience building a post-training platform from scratch.
• Experience applying machine learning to autonomous vehicles or other robotics applications.
