IP Counsel, Trademarks & Domains (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA; hybrid, with staff expected to work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time, with some roles requiring more office time.

Annual salary: $335,000–$385,000 USD.

What you will do

• Run trademark clearance for new model, product, and feature names and provide risk-rated recommendations.
• Manage global trademark prosecution and portfolio strategy, including filing strategy, office actions, and portfolio maintenance across jurisdictions.
• Lead trademark and domain enforcement, assessing infringements, selecting enforcement mechanisms, coordinating outside counsel, and driving matters to resolution.
• Oversee online brand protection with an external vendor and IP Legal Specialist, handling infringements and impersonations at scale.
• Manage domain portfolio strategy, including acquisitions, disputes, and recovery; respond to trademark demands and support trademark-related litigation.
• Advise marketing, product, and go-to-market teams on brand usage and naming, and build playbooks and processes for a global brand protection practice.

Requirements

• Law degree (JD, LLB, or equivalent) and compliance with local licensing requirements to work as in-house counsel where based.
• Substantial trademark and domain practice experience covering clearance, prosecution, portfolio management, and enforcement.
• Current hands-on experience running clearances, shaping filing strategies, and making enforcement decisions.
• Experience managing global trademark and domain portfolios, including UDRP proceedings and online enforcement.
• Sound judgment when deciding which matters to pursue, with the ability to explain decisions clearly to lawyers and non-lawyers.
• Collaborative work with legal colleagues, outside counsel, and business partners, with motivation driven by the substance of the work.

Nice to have

• 10+ years of trademark and domain practice.
• Prior in-house experience at a technology company and a track record of partnering with business teams to enable speed in a risk-adjusted way.
• Experience protecting brands in AI or other rapidly evolving technology fields.
• Experience building or scaling high-volume enforcement and takedown programs.
• Experience navigating brand disputes with commercial, community, or publicity dimensions.
