Lead Analytical Scientist - Mass Spectrometry (Protein Characterisation)

Location: UK - Slough; fully site-based role. Visa sponsorship and relocation support are available for eligible candidates.

What you will do

• Lead complex analytical projects from scientific planning through execution, meeting objectives, timelines, quality standards and regulatory expectations.
• Develop, optimise and troubleshoot analytical methods for therapeutic proteins, with a focus on LC-MS/MS, RP, SEC and icIEF techniques.
• Characterise protein primary structure, molecular size, charge variants and post-translational modifications using mass spectrometry.
• Perform and technically review testing for product characterisation, reference standards and biochemical comparability studies.
• Provide technical leadership, training and practical support to scientists and analytical system users.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external customers, investigate root causes and improve analytical approaches for non-standard molecules.

Requirements

• Significant hands-on mass spectrometry experience, particularly LC-MS/MS applied to protein or biotherapeutic characterisation, is essential.
• Practical experience developing, validating, optimising and troubleshooting protein analytical methods, including RP and SEC.
• Experience characterising protein primary structure, size, charge variants or post-translational modifications and critically interpreting MS data.
• Strong understanding of protein chemistry and regulatory expectations for therapeutic protein characterisation and biochemical comparability studies.
• Experience leading complex scientific projects, investigating technical problems and performing root cause analysis.
• Experience mentoring or training junior scientists in LC-MS and analytical characterisation techniques, together with strong communication and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with capillary electrophoresis or icIEF.
