Director, Small Molecule Discovery Biology (Inflammation & Autoimmunity)

Location: South San Francisco, California, US

Salary: $200,000–$240,000 USD annually

What you will do

• Lead biology strategy for discovery-stage small molecule autoimmune therapy projects.
• Identify knowledge gaps, design screening paradigms, oversee SAR generation, and evaluate potential new targets.
• Oversee biochemical and cellular readouts, autoimmune disease models, and clinically relevant pharmacodynamic assays.
• Provide direct and indirect supervision to laboratory-based biology staff and mentor junior team members.
• Manage external biology studies and CRO collaborations.
• Collaborate with medicinal chemistry, DMPK, preclinical development, and company leadership on project strategy and progress.

Requirements

• PhD and 8+ years of biopharma experience in immunology-related small molecule drug discovery.
• Experience overseeing project biology or biochemistry functions and/or leading project teams.
• Expertise across target discovery and validation through early clinical development.
• Knowledge of compound screening, mechanism-of-action characterization, transcriptomics, and proteomics.
• Experience with autoimmune disease biology, in vitro and in vivo immunology models, primary immune cells, RNA-Seq, and cytokine detection.
• Experience managing CRO collaborations and supervising junior staff.

Nice to have

• Experience with protein-protein interaction inhibitors, degraders, molecular glues, or transcription factors.
• Experience working with academic collaborators.
• Familiarity and enthusiasm for working in a small company environment.
