Head of Risk (Fintech)

Location: San Francisco, United States; work format: Hybrid

Salary: $200,000–$285,000 per year, plus equity

What you will do

• Build the risk function from the ground up and establish customer onboarding and underwriting policies.
• Design real-time transaction authorization, dynamic limits, reserve policies, and exposure assessment for ACH returns, unauthorized debits, and counterparty failure.
• Select and deploy risk-detection tooling, combining vendor solutions, in-house systems, and AI-assisted case handling.
• Develop controls for stablecoins, wallets, requests for payment, and international local payment rails.
• Partner with Engineering, Product, Compliance, Finance, and customer-facing teams to align risk and compliance systems.
• Build toward a scalable risk operation and potentially hire team members within the first year.

Requirements

• Experience building a risk function at an early-stage or high-growth company.
• Hands-on expertise in payments risk, including ACH returns, settlement timing, unauthorized debit exposure, and counterparty risk.
• Ability to design scalable decisioning systems, set thresholds, and handle complex edge cases.
• Technical and data fluency, including SQL and ideally Python, with the ability to collaborate deeply with engineers.
• Experience handling fraud, loss events, failed controls, and consequential decisions under uncertainty.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States; employment authorization is verified through E-Verify.

Nice to have

• Experience with stablecoins, wallets, requests for payment, or international local payment rails.
• Previous management experience and interest in building a team.
