Lead Backend Engineer (PHP)

Location: Hamburg or Berlin, Germany

Compensation: EUR 85,000–EUR 95,000 yearly

What you will do

• Build complex, highly scalable technical solutions for checkout products.
• Define architectural decisions and ensure delivery of reliable, state-of-the-art products.
• Lead and mentor an engineering team while collaborating with Product Managers, QAs, and Designers.
• Deliver new components and features in an agile SCRUM/Kanban environment.
• Promote engineering best practices and use modern AI tooling effectively.

Requirements

• 10+ years of total engineering experience, including 5–6 years as a Backend Developer.
• Experience leading or mentoring team members.
• Strong modern backend web development experience with PHP 8+ in scalable, high-load environments.
• Expertise in Symfony and Laravel, plus strong proficiency with MySQL and Redis.
• Understanding of software architecture and engineering principles, including event-driven architecture.
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Helm, AWS, and deployment pipelines such as GitLab; fluent written and spoken English is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with Golang.
• Exposure to Generative AI and related technologies.
