Backend Engineer (PHP)

Location: Hybrid in The Hague, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands

Salary: €4,500–€6,500 gross per month based on a 40-hour week.

What you will do

• Design backend features capable of handling enterprise traffic across regions.
• Optimize critical paths for performance, reliability, and query efficiency.
• Build and maintain high-quality, tested, release-ready backend systems.
• Collaborate with Product Owners, UX designers, Frontend, and DevOps to deliver business functionality end to end.
• Use metrics and monitoring to debug complex code and functionality.
• Mentor engineers and work in focused six-week development cycles.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building production backend systems and contributing to architecture decisions.
• Strong PHP and Symfony experience.
• Hands-on experience with relational databases, especially MySQL, including query optimization.
• Experience with Docker, GitLab CI/CD, testing, monitoring, and operational reliability.
• Knowledge of Domain-Driven Design and translating business rules into code.
• Strong ownership, proactive communication, and risk identification.

Nice to have

• Kubernetes experience.
