TL;DR
Computer Vision Engineer (Space Robotics): Designing and deploying computer vision algorithms for spacecraft and ground systems, including object detection, tracking, and 6DoF pose estimation, with an accent on rendezvous and proximity-operation scenarios. Focus on defining subsystem architectures, verifying flight software implementations, integrating camera and LiDAR sensors, and developing perception solutions for space missions.

Location: Hybrid role based in Harwell, Didcot, Oxfordshire, UK

What you will do

  • Design and develop computer vision algorithms for space object detection, tracking, and 6DoF pose estimation.
  • Define computer vision subsystem architectures, requirements, and performance budgets aligned with mission objectives.
  • Plan and execute verification and validation activities, including performance assessment and requirements verification.
  • Integrate and test flight software implementations of computer vision algorithms.
  • Collaborate with hardware vendors, supplier chain management, Systems, GNC, and Flight Dynamics engineering teams.
  • Research computer vision algorithm designs for spacecraft rendezvous and proximity-operation missions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a relevant engineering or science discipline.
  • At least 2 years of industrial or research experience developing and deploying computer vision algorithms.
  • Strong knowledge of computer vision, image processing, machine learning, and deep learning.
  • Experience developing algorithms from concept through validation and deployment.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, Matlab, C, or C++, with familiarity with OpenCV, TensorFlow, and PyTorch.
  • Knowledge of software configuration management, Git and Git-flow, and LiDAR or camera sensor principles.

Nice to have

  • Experience with vision-based perception and navigation in space or the space industry.
  • Experience designing experimental testbeds for algorithm training and testing data.
  • Knowledge of rigid-body dynamics, robotics kinematics, LiDAR signal processing, sensor fusion, or multi-sensor perception.
  • Experience with embedded or safety-critical software, CI/CD, automated testing, Jenkins, GTest, ROS, or ROS2.
