TL;DR
System Performance & Modelling Engineer (SATCOM): Developing high-fidelity simulation environments for LEO satellite communication systems with an accent on link performance, constellation coverage, network behaviour, and service reliability. Focus on modelling orbital dynamics, air interface and payload interactions, stochastic network performance, link budgets, and dynamic resource management strategies.

Location: Hybrid work in Harwell, UK; Athens, Greece; Barcelona, Spain; or Porto, Portugal. Candidates must have the legal right to work in their chosen location.

What you will do

  • Develop end-to-end simulation frameworks for link performance, constellation coverage, and network behaviour.
  • Build high-fidelity models for capacity, latency, throughput, reliability, service continuity, and resource utilisation.
  • Model interactions between orbital dynamics, air interfaces, payload performance, and network architecture.
  • Perform stochastic analysis of latency, jitter, packet loss, and multi-hop communication scenarios.
  • Analyse link budgets, propagation effects, power allocation, noise cascades, interference, attenuation, rain fade, and hardware ageing.
  • Conduct architectural trade studies and support dynamic resource management, orchestration, resilience planning, and service optimisation.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of system-level modelling for satellite or advanced wireless communication systems.
  • Experience developing and maintaining end-to-end simulation environments for complex communication networks.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, Simulink, Python, C++, or similar modelling and scripting tools.
  • Knowledge of link budget analysis, including modulation, coding, propagation effects, and noise and power cascades.
  • Understanding of latency, jitter, throughput, packet loss, stochastic modelling, resource management, scheduling, and optimisation.
  • Awareness of orbital dynamics, radiometric analysis, slant-range attenuation, Power Flux Density considerations, and tools such as STK or Visualyse.
