TL;DR
Senior Thermal Engineer (Spacecraft Thermal Systems): Designing, building, testing, and operating thermal control systems for spacecraft, lunar landers, rovers, and surface power systems with an accent on thermal architecture, modeling, component verification, and TVAC testing. Focus on developing mission-specific thermal designs, coordinating subsystem interfaces, supporting cleanroom integration, and providing real-time mission operations support.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA; hybrid with regular on-site presence expected

What you will do

  • Lead the design, integration, testing, and operation of thermal control systems for spacecraft, lunar landers, lunar surface power systems, and rovers.
  • Create conceptual and detailed thermal designs based on orbital trajectories, mission operations, lander architecture, and system functions.
  • Build and run thermal models to support mission operations and guide thermal control system and component design.
  • Support supplier management by developing specifications, reviewing manufacturing processes, and verifying requirements through testing and analysis.
  • Coordinate with program management, systems engineering, and spacecraft subsystem teams on requirements, progress, schedules, and risks.
  • Prepare integration instructions, support cleanroom assembly, write test plans, participate in TVAC testing, and provide mission operations support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or similar Engineering with 8 years of spacecraft thermal systems experience, or a Master’s degree with 6 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of spacecraft thermal system architecture, standards, best practices, components, and suppliers.
  • Experience designing or analyzing heaters, sensors, radiators, multi-layer insulation, coatings, heat pipes, and related thermal hardware.
  • Experience with thermal component specifications, vendor management, and requirements verification.
  • Experience with fluid-thermal design and analysis software such as Thermal Desktop, Ansys Thermal, or Amesim.
  • Experience with TVAC testing of space hardware, including test plans, operations, data processing, or test reports; ITAR access is required, and applicants must be U.S. Persons eligible for required export authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing, building, and testing pumped-fluid-loop active thermal control systems.
  • Ability to take a concept from initial idea through final product.
  • Proficiency in CAD, preferably SolidWorks, and lifecycle management tools.
  • Systems engineering experience coordinating complex interactions among spacecraft subsystems.
