NPI Engineer, Optics and Cables

Location: Santa Clara, California; hybrid. Approximately 30% travel.

What you will do

• Establish optical integrity, qualification, inspection, cleaning, handling, and reliability standards for optical products throughout NPI and manufacturing.
• Author assembly and manufacturing procedures for fiber trays, flyover cables, Co-Packaged Optics, and other inside-the-box architectures.
• Define automated inspection criteria, incoming quality controls, optical test methodologies, and factory-level pass/fail standards.
• Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, optics, and engineering teams on port layouts, cable management, bend radii, cleaning access, manufacturing, and thermal requirements.
• Lead supplier evaluation, technical audits, production-control reviews, qualification, dual-sourcing assessments, and vendor transitions to contract manufacturers.
• Scout emerging interconnect technologies and approve optical performance data before products are cleared for shipment.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in Hardware Engineering or Optical Product Engineering, specifically with high-speed 400G+ transceivers and cables.
• Expert-level knowledge of MPO, LC, and EBO optical connectors, fiber physics, QSFP-DD and OSFP transceiver architectures, and high-speed switches.
• Proven experience auditing vendors, establishing factory-level optical test methodologies, and transitioning complex production lines to overseas Contract Manufacturers.
• Proficiency with optical scopes, bit error rate testers, automated fiber inspection systems, and product fixturing.
• BS or MS degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
