TL;DR
Optical Test Engineer II (Aerospace): Designing, procuring, assembling, and operating optomechanical test setups for high-performance spacecraft with an accent on optical, mechanical, and electrical systems. Focus on owning test stands and major test programs, troubleshooting hardware, performing precision optical testing, and rapidly qualifying flight hardware.

Location: Redondo Beach, United States; onsite. Flexible schedule and travel as needed.

Salary: $115,000–$165,000 per year, plus potential stock options.

What you will do

  • Design and build optical, mechanical, and electrical systems supporting spacecraft optomechanical components.
  • Own key test assets and major hardware test programs across the company.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and contractors on technical and schedule objectives.
  • Assemble, inspect, check out, and troubleshoot test setups and hardware.
  • Conduct test operations for rapidly developed spaceflight hardware.
  • Resolve technical issues with innovative and resourceful engineering solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, optical, aerospace, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in hardware development testing.
  • Strong fundamentals in optical, mechanical, and electrical analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with test facilities, test-stand design and build-up, and test-equipment procurement.
  • Proficiency with data acquisition and control methods, plus demonstrated project ownership and teamwork.
  • Applicants must be U.S. Persons or eligible to obtain a U.S. export license under ITAR/EAR regulations.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • 4+ years of hardware development testing experience.
  • Testing experience with star trackers, cameras, lasers, or other spacecraft optical components.
  • Experience with Zemax OpticStudio, Code V, environmental qualification testing, optical alignment, or precision metrology.
  • Startup or agile development experience.
