Senior Thermal Engineer, Research & Development (Thermal Materials)

Location: Sunnyvale, California; on-site. Travel of up to 20% may be required for customer projects.

What you will do

• Lead applications development projects involving thermal engineering, mechanical design, and mechanical systems for local customers.
• Develop thermal management solutions including thermal interface materials, heat spreaders, encapsulants, and advanced composite systems.
• Drive customer solutions from concept through commercialization and connect local opportunities with the broader R&D organization.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts across metrology, optics, mechanical, and electrical engineering to solve customer problems.
• Represent the organization at industry consortia and conferences and deliver technical training to internal teams and external partners.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across cross-functional projects.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.
• 2–3 years of directly applicable experience with thermal materials and thermal management technologies.
• Expertise in thermal interface materials, gap fillers, phase-change materials, dielectric materials, or thermally conductive composites for electronics.
• Strong knowledge of heat transfer, thermal modeling, thermal characterization, reliability testing, process development, and structure–property relationships in thermally conductive materials.
• Proficiency with thermal and thermomechanical design or modeling software such as Ansys, COMSOL, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD, and with characterization methods including LFA, DSC, TGA, IR thermography, TIM testers, Phase 12, or hot disk.
• Strong analytical, communication, interpersonal, customer-engagement, and project-leadership skills, with familiarity with Agile or Stage Gate practices and JEDEC, IPC, or ASTM standards.

Nice to have

• Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a closely related field and 3+ years of directly applicable experience.
• Experience with semiconductor packaging, power electronics cooling, high-performance computing, or thermal engineering for consumer electronics, aerospace and defense, automotive, robotics, telecommunications, or data centers.
• Professional society or conference participation, patent or publication history, or award-winning R&D contributions.
