TL;DR
Embedded Firmware Engineer (Robotics) (C/C++, RTOS, ARM): Building deterministic firmware for safety-relevant cognitive robots across distributed microcontrollers and SoCs with an accent on real-time execution, hardware integration, and embedded communication. Focus on developing BSPs and drivers, integrating sensors and actuators, implementing safety monitoring and OTA updates, and building hardware-in-the-loop testing and CI/CD pipelines.

Location: On-site in Metzingen / Riederich, Germany

Company

hirify.global develops cognitive robots with distributed microcontroller and SoC systems running real-time workloads.

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain BSPs and low-level drivers for ARM Cortex-M and Cortex-A platforms, supporting hardware bring-up.
  • Architect FreeRTOS or comparable RTOS application layers, including task structures, synchronization, priorities, and resource allocation.
  • Integrate IMUs, encoders, tactile, ToF, force/torque sensors, and BLDC motor controllers with filtering, calibration, and timestamping.
  • Implement CAN-FD, micro-ROS/DDS-XRCE, and EtherCAT communication middleware for low-latency robot control.
  • Build safety monitors, safe-state machines, watchdog handling, OTA updates, boot management, and non-volatile configuration storage.
  • Develop unit and integration tests, support HIL setups, and integrate automated firmware testing into CI/CD.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of professional embedded firmware development in real-time, resource-constrained environments.
  • Expert-level C/C++ knowledge, including memory models, volatile and atomic operations, stack management, and linker scripts.
  • Hands-on experience with ThreadX or a comparable RTOS, ARM Cortex-M platforms, interrupts, synchronization, and timing analysis.
  • Practical experience with interfaces such as EtherCAT, SPI, I²C, UART, USB, or CAN-FD, including protocol debugging with logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Good English is required; German is advantageous for day-to-day collaboration.

Nice to have

  • Experience with ARM Cortex-A, embedded Linux, or Zephyr.
  • Familiarity with micro-ROS or ROS 2 integration and Fast DDS.
  • Experience with Unity, Ceedling, or GoogleTest for embedded systems.
  • Ability to read hardware schematics and collaborate at the hardware/software boundary.

Culture & Benefits

  • Close collaboration with electronics, systems, AI/software, mechanical, and hardware engineering teams.
  • Participation in firmware architecture reviews and shared embedded coding standards.
  • Work on safety-relevant robotic systems with real-time and resource-constrained requirements.
