Platform Research Engineer (AI/ML)

Location: On-site in San Francisco, California, United States

Salary: $200,000–$335,000 annual base salary, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Build and improve hinting primitives, algorithms, and systems for online self-distillation and continuous learning from production traces.
• Develop trace search, trace mining, data labeling, synthetic environment, and evaluation systems that support the continual learning loop.
• Research multi-agent system architectures, including agent coordination and trade-offs between different approaches.
• Build coding agents that automatically create delivery agents and hill-climbing harnesses.
• Translate customer deployment and applied research learnings into generalizable platform features.
• Collaborate with AI product engineers to integrate ML capabilities into polished platform experiences.

Requirements

• Strong software engineering fundamentals combined with deep ML and AI knowledge.
• Production research experience, including training models for production deliveries and publishing in conferences, blogs, or reports.
• Strong experimental design skills and a rigorous approach to running experiments.
• Ability to manage complexity across multiple workstreams.
• Ability to read research papers and translate prototypes into shippable engineering.
• Ability to work on-site from the San Francisco office.

Nice to have

• Experience with reinforcement learning, continual learning, or distillation.
• Experience building evaluation frameworks, benchmarks, or data quality systems.
• Experience with multi-agent system architectures and their trade-offs.
• Published work or open-source contributions in AI/ML systems.
• Experience as a founder or early engineer at a zero-to-one company.
