Staff Embedded Engineer (Renewable Energy)

Salary: $180,000–$210,000 per year, plus equity grants

What you will do

• Design and implement real-time power-management control algorithms, including load shedding, relay sequencing, and fault-response state machines.
• Own the functional safety lifecycle for embedded software, including hazard analysis, FTA, SW-FMEA, safety mechanisms, diagnostics, and certification artifacts.
• Drive safety-critical features from concept through implementation, testing, and certification for UL 1998, UL 60730, and UL 3141.
• Develop fault-injection frameworks and Hardware-in-the-Loop testing for bench and system-level validation.
• Collaborate with software, product, hardware, electrical, and mechanical engineering teams to define requirements and validate behavior.
• Set engineering standards, influence cross-functional decisions, and mentor engineers through design and code reviews.

Requirements

• Deep knowledge of electrical power systems, including power conversion, load control, energy metering, and switching systems.
• Experience designing real-time control algorithms on microcontrollers, including PID controllers, state machines, and timing-critical RTOS software.
• Hands-on functional safety experience with UL 1998, UL 60730, UL 3141, IEC 61508, or ISO 26262, including FTA and SW-FMEA.
• 7+ years of experience writing embedded software for hardware devices in C++ or object-oriented C on microcontrollers.
• Strong modern software design fundamentals, including object-oriented design, manual memory management, and real-time constraints.
• Ability to own projects end to end, translate requirements into implementation and testing tasks, collaborate effectively, and mentor others.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI tools for software architecture, design, implementation, and testing.
• Experience with STM32 or other ARM Cortex-M processors, high-voltage or energy-storage systems, or solar inverters.
• Knowledge of UART, I2C, USB, Ethernet, Modbus, or CAN interfaces.
• Experience with JTAG debuggers, benchtop test equipment, multidisciplinary engineering teams, or V-model development.
