Focus on developing specifications, coordinating design and construction, and bringing diagnostics through testing, installation, calibration, operation, and maintenance.

Location: On-site in Munich or Oxford

Develops hardware and infrastructure for commercial stellarator fusion power plants, combining stellarator optimization, advanced computation, machine learning, and high-temperature superconducting magnets.

What you will do

  • Lead the design and build of spectroscopic diagnostics for the Alpha stellarator.
  • Develop specifications for visible, X-ray, vacuum ultraviolet, and extreme ultraviolet spectroscopic systems.
  • Define diagnostic performance requirements for measuring ion temperature, impurity concentration, and plasma flow.
  • Coordinate with engineering, software, fusion science, and fusion engineering specialists to establish robust implementations.
  • Plan and manage the full lifecycle from design, procurement, and construction through testing, installation, commissioning, calibration, operation, and maintenance.
  • Oversee, delegate, or subcontract work packages to complete the diagnostic systems.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in physics, engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience using high-resolution spectrometers.
  • Experience with at least one spectroscopic diagnostic instrument on a large infrastructure machine such as an accelerator, telescope, laser, or fusion device.
  • Strong knowledge of geometric optics and light propagation in optical systems.
  • Working knowledge of Python software development and modern toolchains including uv and git.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing and building spectroscopic systems for plasma devices.
  • Experience using optical design software for ray tracing.
