Applied Research Engineer (AI)

Location: San Francisco, California; on-site at the Mission office

Salary: $200,000–$320,000 annual base salary, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Train and post-train enterprise AI models from environment design through deployment.
• Own customer engagements end-to-end and work directly with technical and business stakeholders.
• Analyze unfamiliar customer architectures, data systems, workflows, and requirements.
• Build and deploy agents that deliver value in customer environments.
• Translate customer learnings into improvements for general-purpose agents and the platform.
• Collaborate with research, product, and infrastructure teams on architectures, evaluation frameworks, and best practices.

Requirements

• Meaningful AI research experience in industry or academia.
• Ability to work in unfamiliar codebases and train models on messy, real-world data.
• Strong problem-solving skills in ambiguous and rapidly changing environments.
• Ability to work directly with customers by listening, empathizing, and understanding organizational workflows.
• Ownership mindset with the ability to deliver problems and engagements end-to-end.
• Willingness to work on-site from the San Francisco office.

Nice to have

• Experience training or fine-tuning language models in production.
• Experience building reinforcement-learning environments, evaluation frameworks, or agent systems.
• Founder or early-engineer experience at a zero-to-one company.
• Side projects, open-source contributions, or published technical work.
• Experience in forward-deployed or customer-facing engineering environments.
