TL;DR
Meteorological Scientist (Data Assimilation and NWP) (Atmospheric Sciences/Weather Forecasting): Improving weather forecasts and observational analyses by integrating balloon-constellation observations into traditional and AI-based data assimilation systems, with an accent on numerical weather prediction, observation quality, and forecast verification. Focus on evaluating observation impact, developing quality-control algorithms, creating scientific visualizations, and advancing AI-based assimilation for the WeatherMesh AI forecast system.

Location: On-site in Redwood City, California, with opportunities for work in Redwood Shores and Washington, DC; in-person preferred

Salary: $110,000–$150,000 per year

hirify.global Systems develops weather intelligence using data collected by its proprietary smart weather balloon constellation.

What you will do

  • Evaluate and optimize the impact of balloon observations across traditional and AI-based data assimilation.
  • Collaborate with the Machine Learning team to advance AI-based data assimilation for the WeatherMesh AI forecast system.
  • Design visualizations and analyses demonstrating how in-situ observations affect forecast quality.
  • Refine and develop quality-control algorithms for in-situ weather observations.
  • Communicate technical findings to scientific, government, and business stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Strong background in atmospheric sciences and weather analysis.
  • Experience with data assimilation and numerical weather prediction.
  • Experience working with weather radar, satellite, surface, and upper-air observations.
  • Experience using LLMs to implement code.
  • Strong understanding of statistical methods for validating observation quality and verifying weather forecasts.
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, or a related field preferred.

Nice to have

  • Experience with GSI, JEDI, GFS/FV3, or MPAS data assimilation and NWP systems.
  • Scientific programming experience with Python, Fortran, and/or C/C++.
  • Experience with weather-observation instrumentation, including design, calibration, and quality control.
  • Scrappiness and the ability to learn unfamiliar domains quickly.
