Sr Research Engineer (Network Security)

Location: Reston, Virginia, United States; hybrid work schedule with office presence

Annual base salary: Engineer IV $135,800–$183,300; Engineer V $164,300–$222,300. Discretionary bonus and potential stock awards may also apply.

What you will do

• Identify research and development opportunities aligned with long-term business strategy and technology objectives.
• Develop real-world solutions, use cases, software prototypes, and systems prototypes for difficult technology problems.
• Research Internet infrastructure applications and protocols and develop integration strategies across the company and industry.
• Collaborate with business and technology leaders to assess risks and accelerate business opportunities.
• Mentor junior engineers and coordinate interdepartmental research projects, including the Research summer internship program.
• Present research ideas, prototypes, and results at internal, external, and industry forums.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 8–10+ years of experience in research engineering, ideally combining professional and academic experience.
• Experience with systems development research, prototype development, network security, cryptography, privacy, identification, and authentication.
• Experience with open Internet protocols and services such as DNS, IP, and RDAP, as well as large-scale network traffic data analysis.
• Strong development skills in C, C++, Java, and/or Python, plus SQL, NoSQL, or equivalent data storage technologies.
• Experience presenting at technical conferences, authorship of peer-reviewed publications, knowledge of *nix operating systems, and experience working in research teams.

• PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
